Breast augmentation in Italy

Breast augmentation, known as breast augmentation, is a surgical procedure with cohesive silicone gel implants, round or anatomical (drop-shaped), which allows you to improve the size and shape of the breast, reshaping it, to obtain a look bigger and more natural.

The reasons that lead a woman to want to enlarge her breasts can be different and some of them may be the failure to develop breast tissue, breast reduction due to pregnancy, drastic breast decrease or aging, or surgical removal of breast tissue due to to a disease, such as cancer.

By inserting an implant, the surgeon is able to increase a woman’s breasts by one or more sizes. Breast implants can be placed in front of or behind the pectoral muscle, and the location may depend on the patient and the surgeon’s judgment.

Based on our experience, patients who have underdeveloped breast tissue prefer the insertion of implants behind the muscle. This particular surgical procedure is called the “Dual Plane technique” since the pectoral muscle will create additional padding, preventing the implant from being perceived from the outside.

Who is the ideal candidate for breast augmentation?

Breast augmentation can increase self-confidence and improve the aesthetic appearance, but without necessarily distorting it. For this reason, before deciding to have surgery, we recommend that you think carefully about your expectations and talk to your surgeon.

The preoperative visit for breast augmentation

During the initial consultation, the surgeon will assess the patient’s state of health and explain which surgical techniques are most appropriate depending on the condition of the breast and skin tone.

If your breasts are sagging, for example, your doctor may also recommend a breast lift. It is important to clearly discuss your expectations with the surgeon, who will also be clear in describing the expectations, risks and peculiarities of each intervention. The surgeon will also explain the type of anesthesia that will be used.

How do you prepare for breast augmentation surgery?

The surgeon will give precise instructions for preparing for breast augmentation surgery. In particular, it will provide advice and recommendations on nutrition, drinks, smoking and medications that can be taken and what to avoid.

Anesthesia for breast augmentation surgery

Breast augmentation can be performed under general anesthesia, which allows you to sleep during the entire operation. Alternatively, it is possible to use local anesthesia in combination with a sedative to ensure that the patient can be relaxed but conscious. However, in the latter case, you might feel a little annoyed.

The post-operative course in breast augmentation

Return to work is possible within a few days, depending on the type of activity being performed, but it will be necessary to follow the surgeon’s advice on resuming normal exercises and activities.

The breasts will likely be sensitive to direct stimulation for two or three weeks after surgery, so it is advisable to avoid physical contact until the breasts are no longer painful.

The scars will turn pink for at least six weeks, but after several months they will begin to fade, although they will never completely disappear.

After breast augmentation for women who are in the age group for which mammography is recommended, it is good to continue to undergo routine visits. Mammograms can be done without problems although the mammography technician will have to use a special technique to ensure a reliable reading.

Any complications in breast augmentation

Breast augmentation is a safe procedure, just like breast reduction, but as with any operation there may be risks and complications such as:

  • Pain and discomfort. In the postoperative period, the surgeon will prescribe pain relievers to patients to reduce pain and facilitate the healing process.
  • Bleeding and bruising. On rare occasions, severe bleeding can be found in the pocket created for the implant, which can later give rise to a hematoma. This problem can arise within 10 to ten days after the operation.

  • Infection. Very rarely, the hematoma caused by an effusion can become infected and lead to the formation of an abscess or a collection of pus. The abscess can still be removed through surgery.

  • Scars. They can take an elongated shape or become thickened, but in most cases they present with a barely noticeable line.

  • Capsular contracture. A protective layer of scar tissue forms around the implant, sealing it from the rest of the body. This protective layer is called the “capsule”. In some cases, this capsule can contract around the implant, increasing its thickness. This condition is not painful, but it is still annoying; however, if it causes constant pain, discomfort and deformation of the breast, further surgery will be required to remove the implant.

  • Breast investigations. Exams such as mammography and ultrasound, in the presence of silicone implants, are not a problem, but it is good to inform the radiologist of their presence. Furthermore, breastfeeding is still possible after motherhood.

  • Shape and symmetry. It is extremely rare that the two breasts can be symmetrical, however, the asymmetry can become more evident after an infection or a capsular contraction.

  • Sensory changes. The nipple and areola can become totally numb in the immediate post-operative period. This state of complete numbness is temporary and can last for a couple of days. However, within a few months of surgery, the sensitivity of the nipples and areola will return to normal.
