Labioplasty (also known as labia minora reduction or lip reduction) is a plastic surgery procedure aimed at reshaping the labia minora of the vagina. The size and shape of the labia vary significantly over time and can change due to different events over the course of life. While some women are born with larger than average genitals (congenital hypertrophy), others undergo changes due to childbirth and aging, phenomena that can enlarge and deform the small vaginal lips.

Who is the ideal candidate for labioplasty?

There are many women who suffer from lip hypertrophy, a condition that can cause insecurity and embarrassment in everyday life. This can also have a detrimental effect on a woman’s sex life, making intimate relationships difficult. This situation can also cause soreness during physical exercise (gym, bicycle, horseback riding) or during sexual intercourse. A labioplasty can be performed to reduce the asymmetry of the labia minora (when one is longer than the other) or, more commonly, to reduce the length of both, so that they no longer create discomfort and are no longer visible when wearing. a swimsuit or tight garment.

Labioplasty should not be performed on girls under the age of 18 as the genitals continue to develop beyond puberty into early adulthood.

The postoperative course in the reduction of the labia minora

No particular dressing is necessary in the operated area, but it is simply recommended to wear an external absorbent (panty liner) to protect the area.

The labia minora are often very swollen during the first postoperative period, due to the edema caused by the procedure itself and by the anesthetic solution injected into the tissues. Depending on the case, patients will be able to resume work (as long as it is not physically tiring) as early as 3-4 days after surgery. To allow for optimal healing, it is advisable to avoid using internal tampons, to wear tight-fitting clothes and to refrain from having sexual intercourse for about 6 weeks after surgery.

While most of the swelling generally goes away within about 6 weeks, it can take up to six months for the residual swelling to completely disappear. After a correctly performed labioplasty, there is no loss or reduction in the sensitivity of the operated area (although this may temporarily decrease in the early post-operative period, during the healing phase).
